Protectionist Standards

The principle of subsidiarity is completely ignored when it comes to transport, because the main (or only) single aim of the Commission and the politicians is to protect the European industry. Carmakers, train factories, decisions onΒ  which fuels to favor, all is directed at the central interests. It is no secret, of course, that there are many good reasons that EU is designed to protect its own market and producers. It is about keeping the economy up and running, competing with innovation and lower cost production in China and USA, both protecting EU workplaces and avoiding a strategic lockdown with too little internal supply to keep the economy running in times of crisis, even war. Still, much of the transport policies are alien to protecting real local interests and innovation. In stead, the Commission invariably executes on the demands of big industry, including the carmaking industry of the EU and the major producers of train equipment.

This has led to such calamities as: 1. Very slow adaption of electric cars because of especially German carmakers being against it. 2. Very strange ideas on deciding which car lights should be on when driving, which is clearly a local issue not an EU one. 3. A ridiculous 'standardization' of sizes of packaging, that allows for a wide variety of metric measures, but of course no US sizes, which is factually not important on the domestic EU market. 4.Β
