Agricultural Abyss

Besides energy and steel, farming is the original issue at hand for solving with the Communities and the Common Market. It has cost trillions of Euro to keep EU farming running, and sometimes led to completely absurd situations such as extreme surplys production of butter, milk and other products. The dilemma is that farming is a strategic issue for reliable self-sufficiency in food production, control of consumer prices, and at the same time serving as a sort of social support for a group of independent businesses that in some countries keeps a large part of the population occupied.
