EU as Distraction for National Politics
In the season, every 5 years or so, national politicians and leaders in member states are distracted by competition for the appearently very attractive positions in EU. This goes on for months and all the agendas take back seat for potitioning games. This crazy weirdness must stop and the only way can simply be by the following steps:
- Strictly limiting the number of posts at stake to the very necessary. The other positions must be covered ad-hoc only for the necessary period. Parliament can decide when and why to establish a temporary politician in a certain position.
- The Top Commission leaders reduced to just one, the chairperson.
- Commissioners limited to 4 or 5 and the number of Directorate Generals similarly.
- The posts are only for one term, and limited to a set of well-defined high government members - should be appointed or rather declared well in advance.
- No national competition for posts, all are according to a rotation principle like the one used in the UN Security Council.
